A legendary myth traces the origin of the Pamphilj family to Numa Pompilius, the second king of Rome, highlighting its ancient and noble lineage. The Pamphiljs reached the height of power when, in 1644 Giovanni Battista Pamphilj was elected pope with the name of Innocent X. This silent, introverted and sometimes surly pope - yet highly intelligent - knew how to take advantage of his role, both as far as family interests were concerned, as well as by giving value to certain strategic places in Rome. He was also a great patron. Under his pontificate, Piazza Navona was refurbished, thus becoming the main stronghold of the family. To them, Eitch Borromini has dedicated one of the larger rooms of the property, on the corner between Via Sant'Agnese and Piazza Navona.
