Deluxe Quadruple Suite with view
A large room with a large living room, a walk-in closet and frescoes inside. In the living room a large golden boiserie dominates. It is said that Pope Innocent X Pamphilj (1644-1655) loved to work here mainly at night and that he met his sister-in-law Donna Olimpia here in the building still under construction to decide the fate of the Church. The decade of Pope Innocent X was undoubtedly among the most fruitful in the development of Roman Baroque. A diplomatic man, he succeeded in asserting his role as mediator between the great European powers at a time that was not very favorable for the Church and for the Italian States. It was in this context that he promoted his "politics of image". "Art and power" thus became the main themes to arouse credibility and wonder. The same binomial is present here in the papal room where Innocent slept. In the suite, with its shining wood paneling at the entrance, of gilded wood and mirrors, the beauty of art is captured at the time, but at the same time the power of political power. In the room there is still access to an underground gallery (located behind the headboard of the bed), which connects the Roman College to Castel Sant'Angelo, escape route for the pope in case of danger. The suite overlooks Piazza Navona with a beautiful view of Palazzo Madama, one of the historic palaces of Rome, today the seat of the Senate of the Republic. The building was built in the fifteenth century by the Medici family and its name derives from the Duchess Margherita D'Austria, known as "Madama", who placed her residence there for a long time.
From all the windows of the room have a superb view over the fountains and the square below, sitting on the desk in front of so much beauty, it will be easy to understand why the family decided to build the College Innocenziano right here and to make the place the "Island dei Pamphilj ", a magnificent example of Baroque architecture and the power of the family. The 'San Pietro' Suite is located at the end of the fifth floor corridor. The ceiling of the room is asymmetric and composed of wooden beams, because we are in correspondence with the roof of Palazzo Pamphilj. The peculiarity of the suite - and that gives it back its name - is that of having a delightfully small terrace overlooking San Pietro. This is perhaps one of the best points of the city from which to enjoy the view of the basilica, the center of world Christianity. Heart and symbol not only religious but distinctive of Rome in its entirety, it is still considered the largest Catholic church in the world. For the creation, management and conservation of its artistic / architectural heritage was even created a body in charge: La Fabbrica di S.Pietro.
